Importance of reading |
Reading helps in analytical thinking.
Analytical thinking skills by definition, is the ability to visualize, articulate and solve both complex and uncomplicated problems and concepts and make decisions that are sensible based on the available information-. And what does reading do? It leads you to a room full of information from which analysis can be made. Analytical skills is needed in everyday activities like driving, insurance, business practices, assignments and even your project works. You really need this skill in your studies here in UDS.A research conducted by Dr. Anne E. Cunningham, professor of psychology in the University of Berkeley in California shows that, readers are seen to have general knowledge and are able to spot patterns a lot quicker. The more patterns you spot , the more developed your analytical thinking skills become.

It fills you with knowledge and takes you out of ignorance
Knowledge is power but ignorance is a disease. No one has learned anything and no one has ever acquired any knowledge except by reading and observation. Reading whether from a newspaper, from the net, a book ,a magazine or any other source, fills your mind with precious information that increase s your knowledge. When you lose everything in life-money,cars,houses,etc. Remember that your knowledge can never be taken away from you. Acquire more knowledge for success by reading more as if it is your chance to exist in University for Development Studies.
Vocabulary improvement
It is no doubt that reading certainly improves ones vocabulary. The more you read, the more words you get exposure to. And the more exposed your to words, phrases and sentences, the proficient you are in delivering them (speaking). Again, a well-spoken and an articulated person have higher self confidence. A better and a positive self esteem means, the greater your chances of succeeding in life. You're able to defend yourself because you're well-spoken. You'll get that job because you will do well in answering the interview with precision. Vocabulary improvement goes hand- in- hand with writing skills. As you read your way to success, you get exposed to well edited and well written books and articles that express an opinion. As you read and observe the cadence, fluidity and the writing styles of other authors, it invariably have an effect on your own work too. Therefore, you're able to write better because you've been exposed to proper punctuation, proper use of grammar, idioms and numberless.
Reading is a brain exercise
Reading stimulates the mind and helps to maintain its power. During reading, your eyes look at written symbols, characters and text and transmit these information to the brain. The brain therefore decode and interpret the information sent to create meaning. This exercise keeps the brain sharp and powerful. A study conducted in Standford University proves that reading is the workout the brain needs in order to stay active in its good health.

Greater tranquility
Greater tranquility is gained via reading. Reading requires that you sit comfortably in a calm, quiet and a peaceful atmosphere. Tranquility achieved during reading can enable you unleash you creativity. Even if you are the 'move type of person' or very energetic, reading makes you stay calm as you sit for period of time while you're totally immersed in it. Tranquility helps in managing stress too.
Improvement in your focus and concentration
Reading obviously enhances your ability to stay focused and concentrated. Focus allows you to give all your attention to a thing, may be a book, an article or a newspaper. Concentration on the other hand, allows you to think about something for a long time by considering it from both view points. For this reason, there is a need to develop your reading attitude. For no invention was made without the inventor haven't gone through a period of focus and concentration. Your ability to stay focus on your overall life goals will can be boosted with active reading.

Reading will boost your memory as a UDS student
We don't need to argue here. For reading will surely boost your memory capacity. Think for a moment about the times when you hated to read and see whether you could remember anything then. But now, by the virtue of you reading, you can easily recall the names of characters in a book you've read, the plots and scenes, conflicts and several things. Research have shown that every new memory you create forges new synapses(brain pathways) and strengthens the existing ones,which helps in shot time memory recall. Isn't it cool?
